Cadets may apply for only one course among the IACE, the PPS and the GPS. In addition to the choice above, a cadet may also apply for one or two courses among the SLC, the AATC-AO, the AATC-AM, the AIC, the SIC and the OT. If a cadet is applying for more than one course they must indicate preference on their application by indicating the numbers 1 and 2 on the line next to the courses applied for.

Cadets who have not been selected and find themselves on the Spares List for the IACE, the PPS or the GPS may be selected for the SLC, the AATC-AO, the AATC-AM, the AIC, the SIC or the OT, if they also applied for such opportunities. A cadet’s acceptance of one of these courses does not affect their chance of obtaining the IACE, the PPS or the GPS applied for. If a position becomes available and he/she is the highest-ranking spare, they will have the option of accepting the IACE, the PPS or the GPS applied for or keeping the course already offered.

Cadet Ropes

A cadet who has applied for two courses amongst the SLC, the AATC-AO, the AATC-AM, the AIC, the SIC and the OT may be a Spare for their first choice and Selected for their second choice. In this case, a cadet’s acceptance of their second choice does not affect in any way their chance of obtaining the first choice, as they remain a spare for that course. If a position becomes available and he/she is the highest-ranking spare, they will have the option of accepting the first choice or keeping the second choice already offered.

A cadet who has applied for two courses amongst the SLC, the AATC-AO, the AATC-AM, the AIC, the SIC and the OT and who is Selected for their first choice, will automatically be deleted from their second choice.

A cadet who has applied for the IACE, the PPS or the GPS and also for other National Summer Training Courses and who is Selected for the IACE, the PPS or the GPS, will automatically be deleted from all other National Summer Training Courses.

The following documents are required for all National Summer Training Courses and are to be submitted with the application form:

  • School report: a photocopy of the school report as specified
  • Narrative: candidates must explain, in a one-page typed personal narrative, why they would like to participate in the course applied for. The narrative is to be signed and dated by the candidate. If the candidate applies for more than one National Summer Training Course, a narrative must be submitted for each course.
  • Course or staff cadet report: a photocopy of the most recent course report or staff cadet evaluation report. In addition, PPS and GPS candidates must submit photocopies of all previous aviation related course reports.
Study
  • Cadet service record: it is important that recommendations made to the selection committee for each candidate enable the committee to obtain a general portrait of each candidate’s capability and potential. Realistic observations should be made on their leadership abilities, carrying out of instructions, general motivation, field of interest, participation in activities and ability to take on responsibilities. After the application deadline, COs must advise of any changes to the behaviour and attitude of a candidate.
  • Application forms for National Summer Training Courses are to be submitted no later than 15 January 2009. Applications received later than 15 January 2009 will not be considered.

Cadets, who will turn 19 after the end of a course, including travel time from the CSTC to return to their home unit, may submit an application.

Occasionally, the PPS and/or the GPS may have to be extended beyond the scheduled departure date, due to non-controllable circumstances such as inclement weather. Any cadet reaching their 19th birthday during a course extension shall be returned to their home unit the day prior to turning 19.

The selection process must be carried out according to accurate and impartial criteria, in order to be open, fair and transparent to cadets and other stakeholders. Furthermore, candidates who are eliminated during the pre-selection stage should be notified and informed of their weak points.

All cadets attending a summer training course will receive a training allocation.

The following general prerequisites are mandatory and apply to all Air Cadet Summer Training Program Courses:

    • not have reached their 19th birthday by the end of the course, including travel time to return to their home unit
    • be recommended by the Squadron CO (and by the Sponsoring Committee Chairperson for National Summer Training Courses)
    • have written parental/guardian consent to attend

If a candidate has all the aptitudes for a course but does not meet all the listed prerequisites, a waiver may be requested. In this case, a waiver request must be included with the cadet’s application form. However, a waiver cannot be granted for a mandatory prerequisite and no more than one waiver may be granted to a candidate for the same course.
